The article researches the evolution of the category "competition" in the world history of economic thought, from A. Smith and to modern researchers. It determines and confirms by quoting the stages of the qualitative changes of competition as an economic phenomena in the world economy of XVIII – XX centuries. Trends of the modern stage of the evolution are revealed.
